Why We Require a Formal Referral Pathway

As an Occupational Health service, we must remain independent. We comply with clinical governance standards to protect our service users.
Engaging in informal conversations about individual cases before receiving a written referral can compromise this independence. It carries the risk of receiving information that goes beyond what is necessary or appropriate.
The Risks of Informal Discussions
    • Breaches GDPR requirements: Unstructured data sharing can violate privacy.
    • Compromises confidentiality: Informal chats bypass formal consent and privacy boundaries.
    • Jeopardises legal proceedings: Information shared informally may deem the OH Advice unsuitable for reliance in any future legal matters.
    • Contravenes ACAS guidance: UK employment advisory standards emphasise the need for clear, documented processes when health information influences workplace decisions.

Our Process
For these reasons, all information intended to inform an Occupational Health assessment must be submitted through our appropriate, formal referral pathway. We do not have verbal or informal conversations about clinical referral matters, only process-based matters. This ensures every assessment is accurate, safe, and aligned with professional standards.
All clinical data must come through the formal referral process. This keeps details complete and structured for clinical decision-making. If we require further details after clinical triage, our team will request this via email.
